SPRINGFIELD – A rookie and a veteran took the top prizes at the hog- and husband-calling contests at the Illinois State Fair.

Seymour’s Chris Karr says he’s entered 24 times and won ten.

“Loving to do this is one of the secrets,” Karr said. Another: practicing far from anybody else.

A first-time contestant won Sunday’s husband-calling competition.

“I said, ‘We can do this. We can do this,’” Bea Brennan of Paris, Ill., said she remarked while watching the contest a year ago.

Sure enough, this year she is a champion, aided by husband Rick, wearing a T-shirt reading, Yes, dear.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
