A Republican presidential candidate tried to play up his moderate credentials during a campaign visit in Chicago.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was asked why he expects more conservative voters to support him after pressure from that wing of the Republican Party forced another Ohio Republican, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, to retire.

He believes his record from four years as governor and 18 in Congress will show he can deliver on promises.

“Yapping and screaming and complaining about it doesn’t get results,” Kasich said. “I appreciate their frustration, but at the end of it all, it’s what you achieve, not what you propose, what you talk about, it’s what you can get accomplished to improve our country.”

Kasich says his accomplishments include helping to balance the federal budget while in Congress, and boosting Ohio’s economy as governor.

Despite the conditions which led to Boehner’s exit, Kasich has called for greater cooperation in Washington in the days since the announcement, saying both parties recognize the need for changes in the federal budget and to immigration.

The RealClearPolitics average of the latest national polls has Kasich 7th among the Republican presidential candidates.
