SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s newest member has taken his place on the floor.

Chuck Weaver of Peoria is the newest state senator, replacing Darin LaHood, who won a special election for Aaron Schock’s old seat in Congress.  Weaver said neither he nor his wife believed he would be picked by a committee of Republicans in the 37th District.

“My wife…she and I and my son were sitting in our living room waiting for the response, and when I got up, my head just dropped,” Weaver said.  “She didn’t know if that meant no or yes.  But, I guess there was some surprise.”

Weaver, who’s diving right in the middle of the current budget impasse, said who knows how long that will last.

“There are so many people who know more about this process than I do,” says Weaver.  “I support the Governor in what he’s trying to accomplish.  We’re here to support him in that regard, and to see long-term change in our state so we can get more people working.”

Weaver said he hopes his time on the Peoria City Council, plus his experience in business and spending his life on the family farm, will help him address what he said his district wants addressed.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
