NORMAL – Aly Dawson and Jaelyn Keene turned in big performances to help the Illinois State volleyball team to a 3-1 win over visiting Bradley Friday night at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds won by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19.

Dawson registered a match-high 15 kills, while Keene added 11 kills and a career-high six aces, four of which came during a lengthy service run in the second set. Ashley Rosch added 13 kills and three aces, while Jacqueline Twing dished out 41 assists for the Redbirds. Courtney Pence and Kaitlyn Hunt collected 16 digs apiece for Illinois State.

Illinois State (19-8, 9-5 MVC) never trailed in the first set. The Redbirds used a five-point run midway through the set to build a comfortable lead and key kills down the stretch from Dawson helped the Redbirds take an early lead in the match.

Bradley (6-19, 1-12) bounced back early in the second set, shooting out to a 9-2 lead. The Redbirds fought back, however, eventually tying the match at 15-15 and later taking at 21-15 on a 12-point binge that included four service aces from Keene. Illinois State finished off the set moments later with a kill from Keene.

The Braves would not go away in the third set, and used a 6-1 lead midway through the set to build a lead and take a set from the Redbirds.

Illinois State came back in the fourth set, though, starting with four-straight points to open the set and never trailing. Kills down the stretch from Keene and Rosch helped the Redbirds finish off the match in the fourth set.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
