BLOOMINGTON – The announcement by Gov. Bruce Rauner Monday that Illinois is putting a temporary hold on allowing Syrian refugees into the state is being applauded by at least one state legislator.

State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) told WJBC’s Dan Swaney he believed the decision is “the prudent course of action” at this time, especially given what is known about last week’s terrorist attacks.

“I think anybody who’s watched the news realizes the dangers that lurk,” said Brady. “I presume there’s some intelligence out there that probably says that be weary of individuals claiming to be a refugee, who may not be a refugee.”

Brady added it’s important Illinois makes sure anyone being brought into the state is safe.

“We’re not giving up the heritage we’ve had in taking refugees and people from other countries in difficult times. We’re just simply saying right now we need to take a step back,” he said.

In the last four-and-a-half years, only three states have taken in more Syrian refugees than Illinois.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
