NORMAL – University High has named Trevor Von Bruenchenhein head football coach.
Von Bruenchenhein is taking the reigns from coach Mike Troll, who will remain on the coaching staff.
“He (Troll) just thought that some youthfulness, some youthful energy, should be brought to the program and so that was part of the reason why he wanted to step down,” said Von Bruenchenhein. “But, of course, at least this seems to be the trend in coaching, it’s hard to just give it up.”
Exactly what role Troll will have on the staff is still being determined.
This past season, Von Bruenchenhein served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He’s been with the program for five years. Von Bruenchenhein explained he doesn’t plan to make many schematic changes to the team.
“I want to bring, kind of, that useful energy that Troll was looking for,” said Von Bruenchenhein. “There needs to be a sense of urgency. I want my teams to be extremely disciplined. I want exhibit some mental and physical fortitude.”
In a news release, Athletics Director Wendy Smith said Von Bruechenhein is a “true student of the game who is always looking for ways to educate and motivate himself.”
