WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Illinois State women's soccer coach Drew Roff has been named the new head coach at Purdue.

Roff led the Redbirds to six Missouri Valley Conference regular-season titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances while serving as the ISU head coach since 2007. He previously spent two seasons as the head coach at the University of Indianapolis.

"Drew is a proven winner with numerous regular-season and tournament championships, as well as NCAA Tournament success," said Purdue senior associate athletics director Ed Howat, the sport supervisor for women's soccer. "Beyond his on-field coaching and recruiting acumen, he is a strong proponent of the complete student-athlete experience, with his teams consistently excelling in the classroom. We are excited to welcome Drew and his wife, Stephanie, to the Boilermaker family."

Illinois State Director of Athletics Larry Lyons told WJBC's Red Pitcher, Roff helped make ISU a top program. He wasn't surprised Roff was wanted by other schools.

"It's probably a good next step for him," Roff said. "When he came to us after the season and said there were some schools interested in him, the first thing we said to him was, Drew, make sure it's a good fit."

The Ann Arbor native was a four-year starting forward at Michigan State, graduating in 1996.

"Throughout the process it became obvious to me that Purdue is a special place, with great people and tremendous resources," Roff said. "Everything is in place for our student-athletes to have great success and have a great overall experience. I am thrilled to join the Boilermaker family, and I look forward to getting started."

Roff becomes only the second head coach in the history of Purdue women's soccer. He replaces Robert Klatte, who started the program in 1997 and led the Boilermakers through their first 17 seasons.

Roff has been the leader of the Missouri Valley's Coaching Staff of the Year five times, including three of the last four seasons. The Redbirds have qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the last four years and advanced to the second round the last two seasons. He has compiled a 98-50-11 mark at ISU and 124-64-12 career record as a collegiate head coach.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
