SPRINGFIELD – After the inauguration, Illinois’ new governor and first lady greeted well-wishers at one of the state’s historic sites.

Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, appeared at the Old State Capitol, where a line for metal detectors kept people outside for a while.

“I’m actually a Democrat,” said Monticello lawyer David Cox, “but I’m open-minded in terms of (Rauner) is our sitting governor now, and I’m open-minded to support him in whatever policies I can for the benefit of the people of Illinois.”

Cox brought his son, an Indiana University graduate student, to see the transfer of power and wish the new governor well.

The Old State Capitol reception was an opportunity for members of the general public to meet the Rauners without having to purchase a ticket.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
