BLOOMINGTON – A new McLean County visitor center pays tribute to the 16th president of the United States.

"Cruisin' with Lincoln on 66" will be located on the lower level of the McLean County Museum of History, and will feature exhibits on dining, lodging, and travel that Abraham Lincoln and others experienced on the road that runs through the county. Greg Koos with the Museum of History said excitement is growing about the new center.

"We know that we're going to have a spring opening," Koos said. "We're getting close to announcing a date, and it's coming along very well. We have a lot of activity happening on the ground floor, so it's going to be a humdinger as they used to say back then."

Koos added that the new center means the departure of some old favorites.

"Some of you may have seen our exhibit about popular arts and crafts of Mexico," Koos said. "That exhibit is closing soon, so I would suggest that if you haven't seen it or if you want to see it again, you come this month before it leaves."

In addition to the exhibits, the center will feature a Lincoln themed gift shop, and interactive children’s area.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
