BLOOMINGTON – Despite a veto threat from the president, Congress recently passed a bill approving the next phase of the Keystone pipeline.

U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria), who supports the project, said the approval comes with support from every Republican and an "overwhelming" number of Democrats.

"That's why it goes to the president's desk with well over 60 votes in the Senate," said Schock. "That bipartisan coalition supporting the Keystone pipeline is something the president needs to listen to."

Schock is urging President Obama to sign the bill. He said the voices in Congress aren't the only ones Obama needs to listen to.

"You have both President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush supporting the Keystone pipeline," said Schock. "You have labor workers, unions, from the plumbers and pipe fitters to the laborer's union all supporting the Keystone pipeline.

"He needs to sign it so we can create those jobs immediately in America."

Schock added the pipeline also will allow oil to be transported in a more environmentally friendly way.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
