2 residents hospitalized in Bloomington apartment fire, woman arrested

By Eric Stock

BLOOMINGTON – A fire at a west-side Bloomington apartment displaced at least six residents early Sunday.

Fire crews were called to 811 W. Washington St. shortly after midnight. The fire was contained to a second-story apartment. Two residents were taken to the hospital for injuries not considered life threatening.

Anita Jumper, 55, of Bloomington is accused of setting the fire. She was arrested Sunday on aggravated arson and residential arson. She lived on the same block as the alleged arson and the charges indicate she knew residents within the apartment. No charges were filed by the state's attorney's office because the McLean County Law and Justice Center was closed Monday.

The Red Cross of the Heartland was called to assisted the residents who were displaced.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
