BLOOMINGTON – The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is giving Illinois Wesleyan University a $350,000 grant.

The university plans to create a three-year program with the money, aimed at addressing the growing diversity in the student population.

Provost Jonathan Green said it can be hard for teachers to keep up.

“A lot of us started teaching college before our students were even born,” Green said. “We have a more diverse student population, not only in the ways people normally think of that, but in terms of students coming from around the world and around the country.”

The money will be specifically used to hire teaching mentors, a visiting professor and to create workshops for professors to work through issues culture and the humanities.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
