Overstreet named 2015 CCIW most outstanding player

BLOOMINGTON – Illinois Wesleyan senior Dylan Overstreet has been chosen as the co-winner of the 2015 "Fred Young Most Outstanding Player" honor in voting by league coaches on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Overstreet was a first team all-CCIW choice and senior Jordan Nelson was named to the third team.

Overstreet (Paxton, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda HS), who shared the 2015 honor with Augustana junior guard Hunter Hill, is the 17th Titan to win the top CCIW honor and the first since guard Adam Dauksas in 2005. Overstreet was a second team all-CCIW choice as a junior and a first team selection as a sophomore.

Overstreet finished 12th in the league with an 11.9 scoring average, was second in assists with 4.21 per game and led the conference with a 2.27 assist/turnover ratio. He was also ninth in CCIW play with a .504 field goal percentage, 10th in steals (1.21 per game) and 12th in free throw accuracy (.720).

Nelson (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln HS) was second in the conference with 3.14 3-point field goals per game and fourth with a .458 3-point shooting percentage. Nelson was also 10th in CCIW games with a 12.7 scoring average and seventh with an .829 free throw percentage.

Grey Giovanine of conference champion Augustana was chosen as the CCIW "Coach of the Year" and North Park's Jordan Robinson and Millikin's TJ Sims were co-winners of the CCIW "Freshman of the Year" award.

As a team, IWU led the conference in scoring (78.6), field goal percentage (.475), 3-point field goal percentage (.405), 3-pointers made per game (10.21), assists (16.93) and assist/turnover ratio (1.39).

No. 2 seed Illinois Wesleyan (18-7, 10-4 CCIW) plays No. 3 seed Elmhurst (19-6, 9-5 CCIW) in the first game of the 2015 CCIW postseason tournament at 5 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 27), hosted by Augustana in Rock Island. Top seed Augustana will face North Central in the second game and Friday's winners will play at 7 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 28) for the NCAA Division III automatic bid.

In addition to Dauksas in 2005, former Titans who have won the "Fred Young Most Outstanding Player" award have been Keelan Amelianovich (2004), Korey Coon (1999 and 2000), Brent Niebrugge (1998), Bryan Crabtree (1997), Chris Simich (1995), John Lipic (1994), David Caldwell (1991), Jeff Kuehl (1989), Blaise Bugajski (1984), Greg Yess (1982), Jack Sikma (1975, 1976, 1977) and Tom Gramkow (1970).

The award is named for 1915 IWU graduate Fred Young, who was the conference's first commissioner and served in the position for 17 years. He was a longtime sports editor of The Pantagraph and starred at IWU in basketball, baseball and tennis. The former fieldhouse at Illinois Wesleyan's was named in his honor.
