NORMAL – Redbird fans can gather at Ballpark Village in downtown St. Louis before watching their team play in the Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournament.

PODCAST: Listen to Scott and Colleen’s interview with Lyons on WJBC.

“it was very positive, our fans loved it,” ISU Athletics Director Larry Lyons told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin said. “We secured (the Budweiser Brew House) again. They were very happy to have us back.”

The pregame Redbird Rally is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m on Friday. Rallies are also planned for games on Saturday and Sunday if the Redbirds advance.

The ISU team hotel is the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch, which Lyons said is larger than the hotel where they used to stay and is a short walk to Ballpark Village and Scottrade Center.

The Redbirds play Indiana State in the MVC quarterinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Hancock Stadium Club

Illinois State University is showcasing one of its newest venues to the public. The Hancock Stadium Club will host an open house on March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We have not done any advertising other than some word of mouth,” Lyons said. “Every time a new group goes up there, the look in their eyes is spectacular. It just blows them away,”

Lyons said the club, which was built in 2013 as part of the stadium renovation, is a versatile space that is perfect for hosting a wedding reception, fundraiser, business meeting, corporate event or other outing. The event is free but registration is requested. It can seat up to 200 people. Nineteen wedding receptions are scheduled there this year.

Hancock Stadium Club is located on the third floor of Hancock Stadium, at 211 N. Main St. in Normal.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
