Fowler named to MVC All-Freshmen Team

ST. LOUIS – Illinois State freshman point guard Shakeela Fowler was one of five selections to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team, announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Fowler has played in 26 games for the Redbirds as a freshman, with 25 starting assignments. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native ranks second on the team in scoring with an average of 11.2 points per game and leads the team with 73 assists. She has also recorded 33 steals on the season and averages 2.7 rebounds per game.

Among league freshmen, Fowler leads the way at 2.8 assists per game and ranks second behind Sara Rhine of Drake in scoring with her 11.2 points per contest. She also ranks third among MVC freshmen in free throw percentage (65.9), trailing Rhine and teammate Viria Livingston.

Overall, Fowler has recorded 16 double-digit scoring efforts in her first season in a Redbird uniform and has dished out four or more assists in nine games. She scored a career-high 21 points on Nov. 23 against UIC and has scored 19 points twice during the year. In a win at Evansville on Jan. 29, Fowler recorded a career-best eight assists and scored 15 points, which helped earn her MVC Newcomer of the Week honors.

Fowler and the Redbirds return to action Thursday, when they compete in the first round of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship at the iWireless Center in Moline, Illinois. The No. 7 seed Redbirds will tip off against No. 10 seed Evansville at 7 p.m., with the game broadcast live on WJBC AM 1230 and streamed live on ESPN3 as part of The Valley on ESPN3 package.
