BLOOMINGTON – The Obama administration recently addressed the so-called ‘diaper disparity’ noting how low-income families struggle to pay for diapers.
A local business owner offers tips on lower-cost ways to cover your child. Krista Cardona owns Pinstripes and PolkaDots in Bloomington.
PODCAST: Listen to Susan’s interview with Cardona on WJBC.com.
She told WJBC’s Susan Saunders there are several national diaper banks. She works regularly with the charity – Giving Diapers Giving Hope. She said if you quality for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Women, Infants and Children, you qualify to receive free diapers.
Cardona sells cloth diapers which she said are far less expensive in the long run than disposable ones. She estimates the cost of disposable diapers at $3,000 per child.
“If you have two or three children that’s a lot of money,” Cardona said. “With cloth disapers, it’s a one-time investment.”
