NORMAL – Jacob Hendren and a pair of Illinois State relievers combined on a three-hit shutout of Southern Illinois Sunday to help the Redbirds avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Salukis. Illinois State won Sunday’s pitchers’ duel by a 1-0 score.

Hendren tossed seven shutout innings. He allowed three hits and three walks, while striking out three. The shutout was Illinois State’s first since May 10, 2015, at Bradley, and the 1-0 victory was the team’s first win by that score since May 11, 2012, against Western Illinois.

Hendren and Southern Illinois starter Michael Baird took turns putting zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Joe Kelch walked and Daniel Dwyer followed with an infield single. Owen Miller then provided the biggest hit of the game, a run-scoring single to left field.

Hendren pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning before giving way to Jake Sale in the eighth inning. Sale induced a groundout and a two fly balls to keep the Redbirds ahead. Jack Landwehr got the ball for Illinois State in the ninth inning, and sat the Salukis down in order, recording the final out via strikeout to earn his third save of the season.

Dwyer and Danny Jackson collected two hits apiece for Illinois State, accounting for four of the Redbirds’ five hits. Miller tallied the only other base hit.

Sunday’s game was a quick one, finishing in just one hour and 54 minutes. The game was Illinois State’s fastest since a run-rule loss at Evansville on May 10, 2014.

Illinois State returns to action Tuesday in its annual “Stuff the Duff” game at Duffy Bass Field. The Redbirds host Purdue at 6 p.m. Admission is free and links for live audio and stats be found at GoRedbirds.com. Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
