BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Thunder coach Dennis Williams expects hard-fought battles the next two nights when his team squares off against Dubuque in the finals of the USHL’s Eastern Conference playoffs at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The best of five-game series is tied at one apiece with the winner advancing to the Clark Cup finals. Tonight and Saturday games start at 7 o’clock and can be heard on wjbc.com

“We really have to manage the puck,” said Williams. “We really have to limit our turnovers in the most dangerous parts of the ice, which is in the neutral zone and the two blue lines. You turn the puck over to a team like Dubuque they can come back down very quick and score.”

Williams added that the Thunder will need a team effort.

“We’re going to have to keep five guys in the picture, so in every zone we need five guys,” he continued. “If we’re heading up the ice on a rush, we need five in the neutral zone and five altogether in the offensive zone. When we’re tracking pucks back, we need five guys in the defensive zone. We can’t have four.

“We can’t have a lackadaisical back-check. We have to be on all cylinders and we have to be ready for a hard-nose zone game. We’re going to have to get net-front for goals and tips and screens. We’re going to have to do whatever we can. For sure, the effort is always there. We just need to make sure we execute our game plan.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
