SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has gone almost a year without a budget and there are only a few days left until the deadline for a plan.
Illinois is currently $7 billion in debt and this week House Speaker Mike Madigan pushed a plan through the House in the hopes of having a plan before the deadline arrives.
State Comptroller Leslie Munger expressed her distaste for the lack of collabortaion and decision on a budget in Springfield.
“I feel like there are some people in Springfield who really think of this is a game, that it’s a game of chicken, and who’s going to blink first and that there are winners and losers. I think everyone needs to understand that there will be no winners in this game,” said Munger.
Munger spoke about the plan and how it would affect everyone in the state.
“We really require a solution that involves taking some cost out of our government, probably in making things operate more efficiently, probably raising some taxes, and then putting in place something that will help our businesses be more competitive and grow. It really is a three-legged stool,” said Munger.
The budget plan needs to make it through the Senate and Governor Rauner before the deadline next Tuesday.
