NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters could not overcome the second complete game of the season by Trevor Foss as he led the Washington Wild Things to a 4-1 win on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.
The Wild Things opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Jimmy Yezzo on the guests’ third hit of the frame. Washington added two unearned runs in the fifth inning when David Popkins drove in a pair of tallies just after the frame was extended by an error.
The Belters answered in their fifth when Dillon Haupt led off with a double, went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Dylan Kelly to cut the Wild Things lead to 3-1.
The visitors added another two-out run in the sixth inning when Grant Fink planted a solo homer onto the right field lawn to build the lead to 4-1.
Trevor Foss (2-2) earned the complete game win with one run (earned) on six hits while striking out eight without a walk. Chris Carmain (0-3) took the loss with seven innings of work, giving up four runs (two earned) with eight hits and two walks while striking out nine.
The series continues Wednesday with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at the Corn Crib as the Belters send right-hander Mike Schweiss (1-2, 2.76 ERA) to the mound while the Wild Things counter with lefty Connor Kendrick (0-1, 6.90). Broadcast time on WJBC.com is 6:20.
