IWU’s Schumacher named national women’s track coach of year

NEW ORLEANS – For leading his team to the NCAA Division III national outdoor championship last weekend, Illinois Wesleyan’s Chris Schumacher was named as the Women’s Coach of the Year for the third time by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday.

The winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

In his 19th season leading the Titans, Schumacher guided the Titans to the Division III team title with 42 points. IWU edged Baldwin Wallace by one point and Washington U. (Mo.) by three points. The Titans had individual champions in the high jump (Molly McGraw) and long jump (Amelia Glueck) and top-three scorers in the 100 (Nia Joiner), triple jump (Jill Harmon) and heptathlon (Harmon).

Schumacher aslo won the award in 2008 and 2010 when Illinois Wesleyan captured national team championships.

Josh Buchholtz of national champion Wis.-La Crosse was named the men’s Coach of the Year while Occidental’s Tyler Yamaguchi and Miles Ketchum of WPI were named the men’s and women’s Assistant Coaches of the Year, respectively.
