WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis said a new online searchable database shows how much House members are spending on their offices.

Davis told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin, the database at www.House.gov shows the Republican-led House has practiced what it preaches.

“Those office budgets have been at 2008 and 2009 funding levels because the House did what we asked Americans to do which was to cut back during the down time” Davis said. ” The House has cut back their spending and now everybody can see it.”

Davis serves on the Committee on House Administration which passed the new procedures last October, six months after colleague Aaron Schock had to resign when he came under fire for lavish spending in his Washington D.C. office.

The report shows Davis spent about $245,000 on his office in the first quarter of the year – most of that on personnel.

Exelon

Davis said Exelon’s decision to close its plants in Clinton and Quad Cities is a disappointing sign. He said nuclear power has taken a back seat to wind and solar energy in getting government incentives. He said nuclear provides low-cost, reliable and clean energy.

“Anybody who is worried about nuclear waste needs to tour Clinton’s facility and they will see every spend fuel rod that they have used since it’s opening is sitting in the pool that’s less than the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.”

Exelon said it would shut down the plants after it failed to get nuclear-friendly legislation passed in Springfield.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
