EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Normal CornBelters dropped a pitcher’s duel 2-1 to the Evansville Otters on Thursday night at Bosse Field.
The Belters opened the scoring in the second inning when Aaron Dudley led off with a single, moved to third on a double to the right field corner by Dillon Haupt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Elijah Trail.
The Otters matched the effort in their half of the second inning with lead-off singles by Nik Balog and Julio Rodriguez, who were sacrificed to second and third as Balog scored on a Chris Riopedre base hit and Rodriguez plated on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.
Hunter Ackerman (2-1) worked six innings for the win, giving up one run (earned) on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Matthew Chavarria (0-3) took the loss with six innings of work, giving up two runs (earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Belters travel to the Metro East area of St. Louis for a weekend series in Sauget, Ill. against the Gateway Grizzlies. Friday’s opener is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on WJBC.com with pre-game at 6:50. Right-hander Eddie Cody (1-0, 7.00 ERA) starts on the mound for the Belters while the Grizzlies counter with right-hander Dakota Smith (1-1, 4.76).
