WJBC Forum: Another mass shooting

By Jim Fisher

Another mass shooting and some of the first words out of our president’s mouth are: “This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people…” He seems to have said the same thing on multiple occasions.

But let’s see what all these events have in common:  San Bernardino, Chattanooga Tennessee, Ft Hood Texas seem to have Islam in common.  But there was Aurora Colorado and Sandy hook and Charleston SC.  The common denominators there seemed to be a deranged loner. The thread connecting them all here is the president’s response to each; His call for more gun control.  Interesting, because there have been more Mass shooting under this administration than the last four presidents combined.

The other thread connecting all of these events is that each of the mass shooters seemed to have been active on social media.  That’s it! Why isn’t the president calling for a ban on social media? Then I saw it. A news article where the FBI has been conducting “Sting operations“on electronic media.  The author, a former FBI agent, explained:  “In recent investigations from Florida to California, agents have helped people suspected of being extremists acquire weapons, scope out bombing targets and find the best routes to Syria to join the Islamic State…” Wow! Our FBI has a dating service for potential mass murderers! The articles goes on to name a “sting “ in northern Illinois where an undercover FBI social media “friend” responded to a “suspect” who wanted to travel to the middle east. The undercover agent responded by suggesting if he could not make it overseas to fight with the Islamic State, he could show his commitment and achieve martyrdom in the United States. A FBI agent trying to radicalize a nutcase to commit martyrdom here in the United States! That’s not a sting operation that is coercion. That makes the FBI an accomplice by any letter of the law. In the article the person coerced into committing a crime was arrested and prosecuted. But what about the other “followers” on that social media site that haven’t acted …yet.

How many more times will we get to hear our president declare a need for more gun control while his administration’s FBI is soliciting “martyrdom”?

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
