NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters gave up a three-run lead in the eighth inning but captured a 4-3 win in 10 innings over the Gateway Grizzlies on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters dented the scoreboard first in the second inning with a Craig Lepre bases-loaded line single up the middle to score Jesus Solarzano and Dillon Haupt.
The Belters added a run in the fourth as Haupt led off the frame with a home run just over the right field fence for a 3-0 advantage.
Belters starter Chris Carmain was perfect through five innings, but the Grizzlies cut the deficit to 3-2 in the eighth inning by scratching out a pair of singles and scoring both runners on an errant throw to attempt a double play, ending the night for Carmain. The guests capitalized on three walks from reliever Francisco Carillo to force in the tying run and send the game to the bottom of the eighth tied at 3-3.
The Belters ended the contest in the 10th inning by loading the bases with a single, hit batsman and error followed by a single by Lepre for his third RBI of the night and the game-winner.
Race Parmenter (3-1) pitched the final two and one-third innings for the win. Will LaMarche (0-1) pitched the 10th inning and took the loss.
The series continues Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at the Corn Crib as the Belters send right-hander Charlie Gillies (0-0, 6.75 ERA) to the mound while the Grizzlies counter with righty Adam Eggnatz (3-0, 3.10). Broadcast time on WJBC.com is 6:20.
