BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington’s city council will vote Monday on renewing an agreement with Midwest Fiber to handle the processing of the city’s recycling.
The city first entered a two year contract with the company, which is based in Normal, in 2013.
“This particular contract represents a model referred to as a shared risk, shared benefit,” said Hales. “That is if we’re not able to, kind of, sell the recyclable material for enough revenue then the risk would be we’ll have to pay them on a per ton basis.”
Hales explained Bloomington would have to pay $78 per ton of materials if there is not enough profit made.
“We’re hoping that in the future the prices that we can get for the sale of recyclable material will begin to go up. Right now it is a very depressed market,” he said.
Hales added the city has only had to pay Midwest Fiber once over the course of the past two years. That was in January this year.
