NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters dropped the opener of the season’s final homestand, 12-5, to the Evansville Otters on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.

The Otters started the scoring with a line drive two-run homer to left field by Denzel Richardson with nobody out in the second inning.

The CornBelters tied the contest in the third inning with a two-out rally on singles from Nolan Meadows and Dillon Haupt followed by a two-RBI double by Dylan Kelly that fell in amid confusion between the center and right fielders.

Evansville answered with a pair of runs in the fourth as Chris Sweeney led off with a walk and scored on a double to the right field corner by Kolten Yamaguchi, who took third on the throw home and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right center by Josh Allen for a 4-2 lead.

The Otters added a run in the seventh with a lead-off single by Yamaguchi, who finished his circuit around the bases with a fielder’s choice, a stolen base and a wild pitch.

The Belters loaded the bases in their seventh and scored one run on a balk but could not drive in anything else to trail 5-3 going to the eighth inning.

The Otters’ Nik Balog pounded the first pitch of the eighth halfway up the right field lawn followed by a two-run homer to left by Sweeney and a bases-loaded triple by Chris Breen to increase the lead to 11-3.

The CornBelters got two of the runs back in their eighth when Jacoby Middleton led off with a base hit, took second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double by Ty Morris, who was driven in by a Santiago Chirino single to cut the margin to 11-5.

Evansville added insurance in the ninth with a two-out RBI double by Yamaguchi.

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
