BLOOMINGTON – Bad news for Independent David Gill.

The Bloomington physician has been working through the court process to be listed on the November ballot along with 13th Congressional District Congressman Republican Rodney Davis and Democrat Mark Wicklund.

The Illinois State Board of Election has voted to remove Gill’s name from the November ballot because he collected two thousand too few signatures. He collected 8500 signatures from supporters.

Davis and Wicklund are only required to collect about 740 signatures because they are associated with a major party.

Kathy Michael is the McLean County Clerk and in charge of elections outside of Bloomington.

“It does get curiouser and curiouser if the Supreme Court ya know hears it after this and reverses that ruling, because we have to by law start sending military ballots out on Friday the 23rd,” said Michael. “We will not be putting Mr. Gill’s name on those ballots.”

Gill has continued to claim the process is unfair and could take the case all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court.

An attorney for Gill issued a statement saying the campaign’s focus is to get the temporary stay lifted, defeat the state’s appeal of a judge’s opinion that Gill’s name be on the ballot.

“They are certainly going to great lengths to keep voters of the 13th Congressional District from even getting a chance at voting for this highly qualified candidate.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
