BLOOMINGTON – State Rep. Dan Brady says he has met with Unit 5 Superintendent Mark Daniel as the district tries to solve its busing problems.

Brady tells WJBC’s Scott Laughlin the district’s busing contractor First Student has seen an increases in drivers, which helps, but he said that’s not enough especially given the weeks of required training.

“Just saying ‘We hope there may be more applicants and here’s what you gotta do,’ that’s not going to cut it,’ Brady said. “You’re going to have to think outside the box and come up with something.”

Last week, Daniel had suggested asking for state resources – including possibly the National Guard – to assist in getting students to and from school.

Brady said the state could consider waiving some requirements for background checks and extensive training for people from certain work classifications because he says the district needs more drivers immediately.

“Why not look at a pool of individuals that have as stellar a record as one can have in law enforcement, EMS, background checks, knows our city streets, things that are something that others will not possess, even with six to eight weeks of training,” Brady said. “What they need more than right now, my understanding, is bus drivers who know what they are doing.”

Brady said that would likely require an executive order from the governor.

The Unit 5 school board meets at 7 p.m. That meeting, like the last two, will be held at Normal West High School to accommodate a large crowd.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
