NORMAL – Speakers from the area, the nation and even from England are preparing to give short talks on a wide variety of subjects next month in Normal.

The TEDxNormal event is scheduled for October 22nd at the Normal Theater with 18 speakers taking the stage for eight to 10 minutes each. TEDx events are local and independently organized, stemming from TED conferences that began as technology, education and design presentations more than 30 years ago but now cover a wide variety of topics.

Dana Vogelsong is one of the locally-based speakers and plans to give her short talk on workplace engagement. She said the topics run the gamut of interest.

“We have speakers talking about things like bullying, mental health issues, motherhood in the workplace, workplace culture and influence of the millenials,” Vogelsong told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin. “It’s a broad range of topics and you can learn about all kinds of things.”

Event organizer Doan Winkel, a professor at Illinois State University, said the speakers are from an equally wide variety of locations and backgrounds.

“Some of them are people I know that I reach out to and ask if they’re interested,” Winkel said, “and other people keep an eye out for where these TEDx events happen and they reach out and apply. People that are interested in getting their ideas into the world know this is an avenue to do it.”

The TEDx series is an offshoot of the TED conferences, short for technology, education and design, that began in 1984 and have expanded to a large variety of topics and locations throughout the country and abroad.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
