NORMAL – Illinois State men’s basketball coach Dan Muller put the finishing touches on this year’s recruiting class Wednesday with the addition of Bethune-Cookman transfer Quintin Brewer.

The 6-foot-8, 215-pound incoming senior forward will enroll as a graduate student and be eligible to play immediately under the NCAA graduate transfer exception.

“We added a ton of length and athleticism and we added some terrific shooters,” said Muller of the six-man class that includes five freshmen. “I think we have a bunch of high character, really talented players and all have great length.

“We filled it position-wise. We filled it how we want to play and we filled it with the types of kids we want to bring in.”

Muller said Brewer brings maturity to the roster.

“He is a high-level rebounder and athlete who is capable of scoring in a lot of different ways on the offensive end. Quintin also brings great experience and toughness to our team and fits in with how we want to play.”

Brewer, a native of Tampa, Fla, was Bethune-Cookman’s leading rebounder last year, averaging seven boards per game. The mark ranked ninth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He also ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game, shooting 113-for-223 (50.7 percent) from the field and 63-for-89 (70.8 percent) at the free throw line.

His field goal shooting percentage ranked No. 6 in the MEAC and he also led Bethune-Cookman in blocks (1.1 per game).

As a sophomore at Gordon State College, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, in 2012-13, Brewer appeared in 26 games, averaging 5.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He scored in double figures four times, earning a season-high 12 points at Albany Technical College.

Brewer began his collegiate basketball career at St. John’s River State College (also an NJCAA DI program) in 2011-12, where he averaged 5.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
