NORMAL – As expected, Illinois State football coach Brock Spack has been linked to the vacant head coaching position at Purdue, his alma mater.
But the former Boilermaker player and assistant coach isn’t giving it a second thought about the talk that surfaced after Darrell Hazell was fired Sunday.
“I’ll be really honest with you, I haven’t been paying any attention to that stuff,” said Spack during his weekly news conference Tuesday. “I have in the past, but I’ve got my own problems right now. I’m in a great place. My focus is on the Redbirds right now. That (Purdue) opportunity seemed to go by nine years ago when I had an opportunity.”
Spack was considered for the Purdue job to follow in the footsteps of Joe Tiller after serving as his defensive coordinator.
“I worry about our team right now,” continued Spack. “I’ve been focused on our team, trying to at least get us to a winning season and hopefully have a playoff team.”
Spack added that he wants nothing but the best for his alma mater.
“I hope they find a good coach,” he said. “They stink right now. I’ve got a lot of pride in the place. I spent 22 years of my life in the place. I’d like to see them win, but I don’t think it will be me.”
