NORMAL – Illinois State men’s basketball coach Dan Muller said he’s ‘disappointed and embarrassed’ by the recent arrests of three of his players over the last week.

Muller said while he can’t discuss the specific cases, he added not all reports are accurate. He told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he tries to uphold a promise he makes to each player and their parents.

“I would treat your son as if we were my own,” Muller said. “We will help him understand how to be a man and grow into a good man, a good father and a good husband, graduate from this university and we will hold them to a very high level of accountability.”

Deontae Hawkins was suspended indefinitely after his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. Derrick Clayton Jr. and Milik Yarbrough face misdemeanor charges in connection with a stolen iPhone.

The fifth-year coach said he’s handling that matter internally.

“When you make a mistake – which obviously we had some guys make some big mistakes, you own up to it, you accept the consequences, you learn from it and then you move on from it,” Muller said.

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
