Dee Mack withstands comeback to advance to semifinals

STERLING – Jared Reese rushed for 121 yards on 17 carries and Derrick Baker threw two touchdown passes as Deer Creerk-Mackinaw advanced to the Class 2A quarterfinals with a 14-12 win over Sterling Newman.

Baker completed 7 of 11 passes for 85. He connected with Alex Carnicle and Jacob Carnicle as the Chiefs grabbed a 14-0 lead and withstood a late rally from the top-seeded Comets.

Sterling Newman scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but twice failed to score on 2-point conversions.

Fourth-seeded Dee Mack (11-1) will play No. 2-seed Annawan-Wethersfield (11-1) in the semifinals at Kewanee next Saturday in the semifinals.
