Golden K Kiwanis donates nearly $20,000 to local kids programs

BLOOMINGTON – Twenty organizations were financially supported as a result of the Golden K Kiwanis’ fundraising efforts during their administrative year ending Sept. 30.

Donations totally nearly $20,000 will impact 16,845 young people from primarily low-income families in Bloomington-Normal.

Organizations who received funding include:
Baby Fold – baby supplies & safety items
Boys & Girls Club – leadership and service projects
Camp Limberlost – funding to support camp programs
Children’s Discovery Museum – money to support science, technology, engineering, art and math programs in more than 16 locations
Children’s Home and Aid – 8 Multiple child strollers
Children’s Miracle Network – funds to support the Children’s Hospital in Peoria
Christ Child Society of Central IL – supplies for layettes for at-risk newborns
Eliminate Project – to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus
First Book – new books for kids
Girl Scouts – Camp scholarship money for girls
Heartland Head Start – books & supplies to support education efforts
Home Sweet Home Missions – bedding and play equipment for the family area
Midwest Food Bank – food for weekend backpack program for kids
Prairie Fire Theatre – funds to support a free elementary school opera tour
Salvation Army – support Youth Night
Spastic Paralysis – continuing research to cure spastic paralysis/disabilities
Special Olympics – support for annual games for disabled participants
Western Avenue Community Center – replacement of playground equipment
YMCA – Strong Kids Campaign
YWCA – first aid supplies & computer installation

Kiwanis International’s pledge is to serve the children of the world. The Golden K Kiwanis is made up of approximately 95 members, mostly retirees between the ages of 50-100. Members generally agree that fellowship and rewarding community service projects are the major reasons for their participation in the club.
