SCHAUMBURG – The Normal CornBelters captured the 100th win for manager Brooks Carey in a 9-4 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday night at Boomers Stadium.

The CornBelters scored twice in the first inning, aided by a pair of Boomers errors. With one out, Mark Micowski was hit by a pitch and he went to third on a double to the left field corner by Pat McKenna. Sam Judah’s grounder to first resulted in a wild throw to the plate, scoring both runners.

Santiago Chirino built the lead to 3-0 by leading off the second inning with a home run over the left field wall. An RBI double to the right field corner by Aaron Dudley with one out in the third put the Belters ahead 4-0, scoring McKenna who reached via leadoff walk, followed by a two-run homer to right by Ozney Guillen in the frame for a 6-0 advantage.

The Boomers entered the scoring column in the fourth inning which led off with a double from Jordan Dean and a single from Alexi Colon, followed by a sacrifice fly to left by Ryan Tuntland.

The Belters loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and plated a run on a McKenna floater to right for a 7-1 lead. The Boomers countered in their sixth by also loading the bases and scoring on a wild pitch followed by a two-run triple by Justin Vasquez to cut their deficit to 7-4.

The CornBelters increased the lead to 8-4 when Cameron Monger homered just over the left field wall in the eighth inning. McKenna went yard over the center field fence to lead off the ninth inning to set the final score.

Chris Carmain (2-0) went 5 2/3 innings for the win, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Scott Plaza (0-1) went 5 1/3 innings and took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
