WJBC Forum: Annual Old House Society house tour

By Michael J. Whelan

That’s right it’s that time of year again, time for the Old House Society’s 2015 tour of homes, which will be from 10 to 4 on Saturday, June 13th.

This year we’re focusing on Groves, as in Dimmit’s Grove, Founder’s Grove, from The Oaks apartment building at 301 E. Grove, to the former auction gallery across from The Oaks, to the Clay Dooley building just east of The Oaks, all the way east to the 1500 block of E. Grove Street. And there is one stop in the 1300 block of E. Washington Street, and last but not least, a shaded back yard garden featuring re-purposed materials that serve as creative inspiration.

Tickets are now available at both Schnuck’s locations, A.B. Hatchery, The Garlic Press, Casey’s Garden Shop, Growing Grounds, the McLean County Museum of History, and the Old House Society Architectural and Salvage Warehouse at 214 E. Douglas Street, one block east of The Lucca Grill.

The tickets are $15.00 apiece, and they will go fast, as they always do, so get yours now while our limited supply lasts.

As you’re touring this beautiful street, you can take a break at the Centennial Christian Church at 1219 E. Grove Street, where Founder’s Grove violinist Ben Hanchett will be performing between 12 and 1:00, and where you can also buy Avanti’s world famous sandwiches, chips, and soft drinks.

This is your chance to tour some beautifully preserved and/or restored homes originally built for prominent members of the community from last century.

Hope to see you there.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
