SCHAUMBURG – The Normal CornBelters tallied all of their runs in the second inning and completed a series sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers with a 4-1 win on Thursday night at Boomers Stadium.
The Belters exploded for four runs in the second inning, with RBIs provided by a Santiago Chirino single and a bases-loaded-and-clearing triple by Mark Micowski.
The Boomers finally dented the scoreboard in the seventh inning, loading the bases but scoring just once on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Alexi Colon.
Mike Schweiss (2-1) earned the win with 6.1 innings of work, giving up one run on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Edwin Carl (0-1) took the loss.
The CornBelters continue the road trip as they travel to suburban Cincinnati for a weekend series with the Florence Freedom. Lefty Kevin Brahney (2-0, 0.64 ERA) starts for the Belters while the Freedom counter with right-hander Coleman Stephens (2-1, 3.43).
