SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers are looking to take on the army of the dead by making October “Zombie Preparedness Month.”
While zombies may be fictitious, the threat of a natural disaster is not – which is the purpose of the bill. Looking to prepare residents in the event of a natural disaster, Representative Chris Welch, who is leading the charge against the undead, explained the idea is if someone has prepared for a situation such as a zombie apocalypse, they have the kind of supplies needed to survive a natural disaster.
“I am told that if you are prepared for zombies, then you would be prepared to deal with a natural disasters like tornadoes, blizzards, natural disasters of any kind,” said Welch. “You would have proper food storage, you would have identified a place you would go to for shelter.”
However, there are representatives who have some issues concerning the idea of preparing for zombies. Representative Will Davis said people may take the idea of fighting zombies too literally and pack dangerous supplies.
“One of my concerns is the only way you can stop a zombie is to bash their brains in,” said Davis. “So does that mean I get to now bring my bow and arrow, my bat with barbed wire on it, or for that matter, my AK-47? Does that make me prepared for zombies?”
Welch explained in reality, families should pack at least a three day stockpile of food, water, and other emergency supplies to have on hand.
