CLINTON – A former chief deputy has announced his plans to run for DeWitt County sheriff.

Mike Walker announced this morning that he’s running for the Republican nomination to replace DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner, who recently said he would not seek re-election.

Walker was the department’s chief deputy from 2010 to 2016 and has been with the department since 1989. Walker also served as the county’s DARE officer in Clinton schools for 10 years and jail administrator for 10 years.

Walker lives in Clinton with his wife of 25 years, Tonya. They have two children, Bailey, a student at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and Connor, who attends Clinton High School.
