Planning commissioners endorse Washington Street bike lanes

A plan to add bike lanes to one of Bloomington’s busiest streets won the endorsement Wednesday of the city’s planning commission.

After a two-hour public hearing, commissioners voted 7-3 to send the proposal to the city council. As part of summer resurfacing, the city would add bike lanes on Washington St, from Lee St., near downtown, all the way to St. Joseph Dr,, near State Farm Plaza.

Opponents believe narrower traffic lanes for cars and more bicycles on the road are a dangerous mix and will tie-up traffic.

Backers of the idea say there’s less danger for bike riders when they have designated lanes to travel, and they contend it’s safer for motorists as well because they’ll have to slow down.

In a note to commissioners, Bloomington Fire Chief Brian Mohr (MORE) said he can’t rule out a negative initial impact, but longer-term, Mohr sees motorists adjusting to the change. A bigger problem, according to Mohr, are distracted drivers.

The city council is scheduled to hold a public hearing and vote on the plan July 10th.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
