EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Normal CornBelters dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Evansville Otters by scores of 9-4 and 4-0 on Wednesday night at Bosse Field.
The Otters put up a big inning right away in the opener, taking a 4-0 lead in the first frame on a two-run double to the left field corner by Shayne Houck and a two-run line driver homer to left by Chris Sweeney.
The CornBelters broke through in the fourth by loading the bases and scoring two on a single to left by Santiago Chirino to cut the deficit in half to 4-2. The Belters tied the contest in the fifth when Sam Judah slammed a double to the base of the center field wall to score Cameron Monger and Mark Micowski.
Evansville regained the lead in the next half-inning on a three-run bomb to the patio beyond right center field by John Schultz followed by a bases-loaded, two-run single by Kurt Wertz Jr. for a 9-4 advantage.
Preston Olson (4-1) worked five innings for the win. Mike Schweiss (2-2) took the loss with 4 1/3 innings of work, giving up seven runs (all earned) on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Otters put on a repeat performance with two runs in the first inning on a homer to left by Houck. Evansville tacked on a run in the second with a double to the right center gap by Cory Urquhart to build the lead to 3-0.
The Otters added to the lead in the fifth inning by drawing walks to the first two hitters and scoring one on a liner up the middle by Houck.
Will Oliver (2-1) earned the complete-game win in the nightcap, giving up three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Leondy Perez (1-1) worked four innings and took the loss, giving up four runs (all earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
