SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner are now less than two days away from worst-case scenarios if they don’t reach a budget agreement.

Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza said in a Youtube video cash strapped schools may have to make difficult decisions.

“Funds for local governments, categorical school payments and general state aid payments for K-12 schools are also on the table,” Mendoza said. “That means that schools across the state may not able to open on time. This is not a false alarm.”

Mendoza is also concerned about social service agencies hitting a new low.

“Social service agencies, domestic violence shelters, mental health facilities and senior and hospital care facilities, many of these entitites will clsoe,” Mendoza said.

Mendoza added even the court ordered autopilot state government will fall nearly $200 million short in August without a state budget.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
