BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington-Normal Jaycees has named the charities that will benefit from this year’s Bruegala event at the Corn Crib.

The Aug. 18-19 fundraiser will support Community Players Theatre, Western Avenue Community Center, Ewing Manor Community Health Care Clinic, Max’s Miles Foundation & Autism McLean.

Bruegala spokeswoman Leslie Brown said the charities will be on hand at a preview event Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Fat Jack’s in Bloomington.

“We have all of the charity groups coming in so you can mix and mingle and learn about how the money that’s raised at Bruegala is going to be used here in our community,” Brown said.

Brown said there will also be a volunteer signup while lawn signs will be distributed and discounted advance tickets will be sold.

Last year’s Bruegala raised $20,000 which Brown said was hurt by threats of bad weather. The 2015 event which was held in Normal for the first time raised close to $60,000.

Organizers say they will have more than 400 beers, including about 100 on tap.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
