SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed a law designed to get more people to cast a ballot on election day in Illinois.
Under the law, visitors to secretary of state driver’s license facilities and other state agencies will automatically be registered to vote, unless they opt out.
“We as a people need to do everything we can to known down barriers and remove hurdles for all those who are eligible to vote to be able to vote,” Rauner said.
State Senator Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, sponsored the measure.
“This bill makes absolute sense,” Manar said. “It saves money millions of dollars for state government and local governments across the state once it’s fully implemented. It improves the accuracy of our voting rolls.”
Manar said it will hopefully increase voter participation.
Illinois is now the 10th state to enact an automatic voter registration law.
