Illinois stocking 80,000 trout for fall fishing season

SPRINGFIELD – If you don’t fish, you’re not on the hook to pay for Illinois to add 80,000 trout to the state’s lakes and ponds this fall.

Illinois’ Department of Natural Resources is filling ponds and small lakes with trout, ahead of next month’s fall fishing season.

Ed Cross with IDNR says 80,000 fish are being added from a hatchery in Missouri.

Cross said that’s where the $15 fee for a fishing license and the $7 from a trout stamp go.

“The great thing about trout fishing is that the fish are paid for by the trout stamps that our anglers purchase,” Cross said.

Cross said you’ll want to get a stamp quickly, and don’t wait too long after the Oct. 1 trout season start date.

“Those fish are there for one reason and one reason only,” Cross said. “That’s for the anglers to harvest and take home. These aren’t catch-and-release fish. These are catch and take home. So they’re there for a short time. You got to get in while you can.”
