WASHINGTON – President Trump is expected to roll out a tax overhaul on Wednesday. The plan is intended to simplify the tax code and sharply cut what businesses and the wealthiest Americans pay.

U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Peoria, told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin the plans would also benefit the middle class which he said is something Democrats have said they want.

PODCAST: Listen to Scott’s interview with LaHood on WJBC.

“Many of the things that we are going to roll out tomorrow President Obama supported and talked about doing,” LaHood said. “I wish this didn’t turn into a partisan issue and I hope it doesn’t because there are going to be many provisions in there in the tax reforms that I think Democrats can support.”

LaHood contended those tax cuts will grow the economy. The plans haven’t specified how the plans would offset a drop in tax revenue.

North Korea

LaHood said North Korea leader Kim Jong-un must be taken seriously even though “his bark is worse than his bite.” LaHood cautioned against any military engagement even as rhetoric been the U.S. and North Korea has escalated.

“It does not end well for dictators and it is not going to end well for Kim Jong-un,” LaHood said. “I think that’s just a matter of time, but I think we have to be careful when you look at the collateral damage that can be done in South Korea.”

LaHood noted about 500,000 Americans live in South Korea. He said North Korea has ignored sanctions and international pressure and the U.S. must be prepared to remove Kim Jong-un at the appropriate time “through negotiation or otherwise.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
