September finishing warm, dry

SPRINGFIELD – It’s been an odd stretch in September as the month comes to a close this week.

Meteorologist Chris Miller with the National Weather Service in Lincoln said we started September cooler than normal but the last week to ten days has been well above average.

“It’s really been a tale of two halves of the month, so to speak,” Miller said.

According to Miller, the month of September is averaging out to be normal in terms of temperatures. He added the last 30 days have been dominated by the tropical storms.

“One thing we notice is when there are tropical systems that are moving up the western Atlantic, or even into the Gulf, ring our weather systems pretty much to a halt,” Miller said.

Miller indicated most of central Illinois has seen only a few days of measurable rain in the last 30 days, leaving most of the area below normal for average rainfall. He noted around 90 percent of the state is abnormally dry or in a moderate drought.
